What is National Honor Society?
SCHOLARSHIP . SERVICE . LEADERSHIP . CHARACTER
"The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to recognize those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1921 ... Four main purposes have guided chapters of NHS from the beginning: to create enthusiasm for scholarship; to stimulate a desire to render service; to promote leadership; and to develop character in the students of secondary schools. These purposes also translate into the criteria used for membership selection in each local chapter." (www.nhs.us/about/)
What are the qualifications?
What is the member selection process for the Buford National Honor Society?
Students with an unrounded academic percent of 95 or higher receive an invitation to apply for NHS membership during the fall semester of their junior year. Senior students who qualify for the first time are also invited. In late August or early September, students with the required GPA will receive an application. Completed applications are reviewed by the advisory board to determine which candidates are accepted into NHS. Click HERE for the current BHS National Honor Society Membership Information Sheet.
How do I maintain membership?
National Honor Society requires that members earn 20 hours this year. Buford NHS will organize or take part in several activities throughout the year, giving members ample opportunities to earn all of their hours. All senior members who maintain membership requirements will receive a NHS cord for their graduation gown. However, violation of the BHS Code of Academic Integrity will result in the loss of the National Honor Society membership and graduation cord.
How can I make sure that my hours are recorded?
Students will be creating and documenting a personal service project during the 2020-21 academic year in lieu of our traditional face-to-face school opportunities and turn in a google slide log at the end of the year.
How can I stay informed about BHS events?
Attend meetings, follow us on Instagram, and be sure to pay attention to Remind texts.
What happens if I miss a meeting or event that I have committed to?
If you become aware that you will miss an event, please email Ms. Pinkerton at the time that you learn of the conflict.
